Yesterday, Conferma Pay hosted a ‘Be Spotacular’ polka dot themed fundraiser in support of BBC Children in Need. Our goal aligns with Children in Need’s
Say hello to Sion who joined us as a Senior DevOps Engineer in May 2023, and hear about his experience so far at Conferma Pay.
Why did you join Conferma Pay?
I felt it was a great opportunity because Conferma Pay were upfront and honest about exactly what they were looking for from the very beginning of the interview process.
I believed that this is a company that would be prepared to listen to me and value my technical experience after being told that I would have a lot of influence in the future direction of the business. Knowing I had the backing of the company ensured it felt like the right fit for me on a personal level too.
What do you love about your job?
I love the hands-on nature of my job, being able to discuss the right methodologies with the technical team and the opportunity to present at a higher level.
I’m always happy to help people and share my knowledge as I like educating people. It’s great as everybody’s on-board and wants to know better ways of doing things. I feel like my high-level expertise is really appreciated.
I like being able to talk to our Senior Leadership Team on the same level, about how we can all work together and discuss how we can make things work for the best.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on our journey to cloud migration. I was invited to the Sabre headquarters in Dallas for a discussion with their Chief Information Officer to present the benefits of Cloud migration to Conferma.
I feel very proud and touched that I was asked personally to come over which was high praise, that recognition and acknowledgement meant a lot to me.
The Cloud migration project will take at least 6 months for it to be initially stable and usable and around 12 months for it to be fully completed.
The project involves looking at applications and services that we currently deploy through our data centres, how to migrate them to the cloud and how we can deploy them differently into the right functions to get the best out of them.
I need to identify the most beneficial and cost-effective solutions and components to allow future scalability. It’s essential to plan ahead to ensure that our solutions can grow with the business and accommodate future requirements.
What are your interests outside of work?
I’m a member of the Bramall Running Club and go at least once a week, it’s a great social activity and community to be part of. I like to visit National Trust and Historical Houses Association sites along with museums and galleries with my family.
Like most engineers in the software industry, I enjoy playing computer games with my son, Laurence who has recently got into gaming.
I have a Raspberry Pi, which is a very small Linux based highly customisable computer to practice development on and I play classic emulated games on it too.
I also enjoy watching British Sitcoms and Sci-Fi films such as the Aliens franchise and the original Star Wars trilogy.
